Privacy policy

Whysk is a meal planning app for iPhone, and this is its website. Whysk is run by one person, Durva Mathure, based in California, United States. In these pages, "we" and "us" mean Durva and Whysk. This policy explains what we collect when you use the website, join the waitlist or use the app, what we do with it and the choices you have.
The short version: we collect what Whysk needs to suggest and plan your meals, we never sell your data, we never show you ads, and you can see, export or delete your data at any time.
What we collect on this website
If you join the waitlist, we keep your email address, the date you joined and which link brought you here (see below). Nothing else from the form is stored: no name, no location, no IP address, no device details.
Which link brought you: if the link you followed had campaign tags in it (for example "utm_source=instagram"), or you came from another website, this page notes the tags or that website's name (never the full address of the page you were on). It keeps that note on your own browser for up to 30 days and sends it with your email only if you join. We use it to count how many people join from each post or site, nothing else.
After you join, this page remembers on your own browser that you signed up, so it does not ask again. That note never leaves your device.
The website does not use cookies or advertising trackers. We count visits with Vercel Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and gives a visitor no lasting identifier: it records the page, the website you came from, your country, device type and browser, and we only ever see totals.
Our host, Vercel, receives your IP address and browser details when it sends you the page, as every website host does, and may keep them in short-lived server logs for security.
What we collect in the app
When you use Whysk on your iPhone, we keep:
- Your account: the email address you sign in with (Apple, Google or a one-time code sent to your email). With Sign in with Apple you can hide your real email from us. If you use Whysk as a guest, your data is saved to a private guest account; create an account to keep it if you change phones.
- Your household and preferences: who you cook for, which meals you want planned, foods you leave out, goals and cooking times.
- Your kitchen and plans: your pantry and fridge items, the meals Whysk suggests, your plans, shopping lists, prep sessions, the meals you cook, skip, swap and like.
- Purchases: whether you have Whysk Pro, which plan you chose and when it renews. Apple tells us this through RevenueCat, our purchases provider. We never see your card details.
- Usage and crash data: which screens and features you use, and crash reports, so we can fix problems and improve Whysk. You can turn usage analytics off in Settings.
Photos and your voice
When you scan your fridge, shelves or a receipt, the photo is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, which reads the food in it. Then the photo is deleted. We never store your photos.
If you set up Whysk by talking, your speech is turned into text on your iPhone. Only the text is sent to our AI provider to fill in your setup; the audio never leaves your phone.
How we use your information
We use your information only to:
- run Whysk: suggest meals from what you have, plan your weeks, build your lists and remember your kitchen;
- email you about Whysk: your waitlist invite, launch news, sign-in codes and important account messages. We do not send any other marketing email;
- keep Whysk working and safe: fix crashes, prevent abuse and enforce limits, such as how many scans you can do each day;
- improve Whysk: understand which meals and features people use. We may use combined, anonymous counts per recipe (for example how often a recipe is suggested, cooked or liked) and may later share those counts with the people who write our recipes. We never share one person’s pantry, scans, fridge or plans.
How long we keep it
Waitlist emails: we delete yours once we have invited you to Whysk and sent launch news, or sooner if you ask.
App data: for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account in Settings, your data is deleted, including from our systems and any backups, within 30 days.
Scan photos and voice audio: never stored.
Crash reports and usage analytics: kept by those providers for their standard periods, at most 12 months.
Your rights and choices
Wherever you live, you can:
- see the data we hold about you, and take it with you: Settings has "Export my data";
- correct it, in the app or by emailing us;
- delete it: delete your account in Settings, or email us to be removed from the waitlist;
- turn off usage analytics and reminders in Settings;
- ask us anything about your data at hello@whysk.app. We reply within 30 days.
California residents
Under California law (the CCPA, as amended by the CPRA) you have the right to know what personal information we collect and why, to access it, to correct it, to delete it, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it, and we do not use sensitive personal information to infer anything about you. To make a request, email us; we may ask you to confirm the request from the email address on your account.
Visitors from the EU and UK
The law lets us use your information for 3 reasons: to give you the service you asked for (contract); because you said yes, for example by joining the waitlist, which you can take back at any time (consent); and to keep Whysk safe and working (legitimate interests). Your information is stored in the United States. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Whysk is for people aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If you think a child under 16 has given us information, email hello@whysk.app and we will delete it.
Security
Your data is sent over encrypted connections and stored with access rules so that each household can only reach its own data. No system is perfectly secure, so we keep what we collect to what Whysk needs.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If the change matters, for example a new kind of data or a new provider, we will tell you in the app or by email before it applies.
